Something new to binge watch: Suits

It’s that time of year when all you want to do is to cuddle with your significant other human/feline/all of the above under a blanket, eat and drink something good and just have a nice time in front of something interesting to watch. The problem which may occur in this kind of situation, is that you may not have an idea of a new series or movies to discover in the comfort of your own couch. Keep calm and read on, I have some propositions for you!

I don’t know about you guys, but I have stopped watching regular television years ago because of the omnipresent advertisement, not always the best timing and program scheduling, but mostly because of the crappy quality overall. Either there’s nothing interesting, or you’ve seen it dozens of times already, or it airs on some ridiculous hours like 3 a.m., you name it. In order to find something new to watch with real interest as a geek would do, before it was swapping DVDs, some more or less legal streaming or downloading adventures which not only could take hours to complete, but there also was a hint of a doubt whether it’s an episode of what you’ve been looking for or a wild hentai version of Dragon Ball popping out on your screen… Thank goodness, it’s all in the past now, as we have some very useful digital services like Netflix for example!

It is precisely thanks to Netflix that I have discovered a bunch of very interesting new series, among which Jessica Jones, Downton Abbey and Suits. The latter is actually the reason of this blog entry, as I would like to recommend it to you!

Suits is an American legal drama television series created and written by Aaron Korsh. Started in 2011, there are 5 seasons so far, showing everyday life of a law firm in New York. The main plot goes around Mike Ross (Patrick J. Adams) – a college dropout with outstanding photographic memory – who runs into Harvey Specter (Gabriel Macht), a successful albeit full of himself lawyer in need of an associate. Mike gets hired by Harvey even though he has never finished law school, and the series focuses mainly on numerous cases the dynamic duo solves together all while protecting their secret.

As far as I’m concerned, this series is just awesome. Let’s list the reasons why you should try watching Suits:
  • Interesting plot
You really want to know what happens next, whether it is a minor case they are working on, a relation between some characters, or the big question whether this time they will finally get caught for fraud and how they’ll try to get out of this mess.
  • It’s straight on funny!
Well, not all the time of course, but Mike and Harvey are more than co-workers and the way they bond is full of funny moments. Also, let’s not forget some amazing characters like Louis Litt (Rick Hoffman) or Donna Paulsen (Sarah Rafferty) for example whose scheming will bring you to tears! Moreover, the show gives a glimpse of more of a human side of a life as a top lawyer.
  • Handsome and wealthy men in suits
Does that really need further explanation…?
  • Powerful women
The firm is run by Jessica Pearson (Gina Torres) – a black woman with such elegance that you just want to admire her. Tough as a rock, she’s really inspiring. There is also a badass red-head Donna who « knows everything » and is so much more than just Harvey’s secretary, and a gorgeous young paralegal Rachel Zane (Meghan Markle) who really wants to make it on her own as a lawyer, without any help of her influent family.
  • Love stories that feel real
Not some « we’re cold-hearted lawyers so it’s just sex », nor cheesy soap opera crap. Each character struggles with their own romantic problems and everyone will find at least one of their situations which they can relate to. Either it’s wanting different things from life, being afraid of letting the guard down, managing both professional and personal life… In the end, you root for them all in between lawyer stuff.
