Why I will not be seeing Rogue One again /// Pourquoi je ne regarderai plus Rogue One

« The best Star Wars movie ever » : this was the general impression I got from the media and the people who saw Rogue One before me. Afraid of spoilers, I haven’t read any deep reviews and I did the classic « la la la I can’t hear you » anytime anyone wanted to start a conversation about it. So we went with my Player 2 to the cinema last week full of enthusiasm and hope to be dazzled once again on the big screen by the adventures taking place in the galaxy far, far away… And on the Hutt’s head, the disappointment was huge.

« Le meilleur Star Wars de tous les temps » : voici l’impression générale que j’ai eu de la part des médias et des gens qui ont vu Rogue One avant moi. Ayant peur de spoilers, je n’ai pas lu de critiques profondes et je faisais le classique « la la la j’entends rien » chaque fois lorsque quelqu’un voulait débattre à propos du film. Ainsi, nous sommes allées avec mon Joueur n°2 au cinéma la semaine dernière pleins d’enthousiasme et d’espoir d’être éblouis encore une fois sur le grand écran par les aventures ayant lieu dans une galaxie lointaine, très lointaine… Et sur la tête d’un Hutt, la déception fut énorme. 

THE STORY

The story itself has some potential, there is no doubt about that. However, when I’m watching a Star Wars movie, it is also to learn what happens next, or at least to understand better how certain things became the way they are. In the first case, I am thinking of the new trilogy that started a year ago; even if The Force Awakens has some flaws, I was captivated by the story and I surely want to know what will happen next. In the second case, I am especially referring to the trilogy I actually grew up with – the episodes I to III; to me they were perfect in explaining how the cute little Anakin became the broken shell of a Darth Vader. As for the original trilogy, let’s face it – they’re pure perfection. Anyway, I was either interested in the adventure and the general plot, or the tale of a particular character who fascinated me.

Pas de doute, l’histoire elle-même présente un certain potentiel. Cependant, quand je regarde un film Star Wars, c’est aussi pour apprendre ce qui se passe après, ou au moins pour comprendre mieux le devenir de certaines choses. Dans le premier cas, je pense à la trilogie qui a commencé il y a un an; même si le Réveil de la Force a quelques faiblesses, j’ai été emportée par l’histoire et j’attends la suite avec impatience. Dans le deuxième cas, je pense surtout à la trilogie avec laquelle j’ai grandi – les épisodes I à III ; à mes yeux ils expliquent parfaitement comment le petit Anakin mignon tout plein se transforme en coquille brisée de Darth Vader. Et en ce qui concerne la trilogie originale, soyons honnêtes – c’est de la perfection pure. Bref, j’étais toujours intéressée soit par l’aventure et le fil rouge en général, soit par des personnages fascinants en particulier.

The problem I had with Rogue One story-wise is that I already knew before even watching it how it would start and how it would end, without any hope of surprise lying in between. And there really was no surprise whatsoever, unfortunately. I knew from A New Hope that a lot would die trying to get the key plans to destroying the Death Star, and I saw indeed lots of rebels dying for the damn thing. What bothers me the most is that I saw nothing else of interest…

Le problème que j’ai rencontré avec Rogue One du point de vue de l’histoire, c’est que je savais même avant de m’installer dans la salle du cinéma comment le film allait commencer et finir, sans grand espoir de surprise entre deux. Et malheureusement, il n’y avait vraiment aucune surprise. Je savais grâce au Nouvel Espoir que beaucoup allaient périr dans l’effort de récupérer les plans clés à la destruction de l’Etoile de la Mort, et j’ai en effet vu plein de rebelles mourir pour ce fichu machin. Mais ce qui me dérange surtout, c’est que dans tout le film je n’ai rien vu d’autre qui serait intéressant…

Maybe it is due to the fact that none of the characters of Rogue One really spoke to me. I hear a lot of people applauding the diversity of the characters and the fact that anyone can find someone to relate to. I also witness adoration for the main character Jyn Erso, especially thanks to the fact that we have another female hero put forward. But I have to say, I cannot agree with all of this.

C’est peut-être lié au fait qu’aucun personnage de Rogue One ne m’a vraiment touchée. J’entends beaucoup de gens applaudir la diversité des personnages et le fait que n’importe qui peut s’y retrouver. Je vois également de l’adoration pour le personnage principal Jyn Erso, surtout parce que nous avons un nouveau héro féminin mis en avant. Mais je dois vous avouer que je ne suis pas vraiment d’accord avec tout cela.

To be honest, I really don’t care if the main hero is a boy, a girl or an Ewok – well okay, maybe I’ll be naturally more drawn to an Ewok… But that’s it! As long as the character is deep, interesting and well played I will love him/her/it with all my geeky heart. And the thing about Jyn is that I didn’t buy it AT ALL. She barely speaks, to me she has not enough of fierceness and there is just no spark between us. If you want to compare, you should have seen my face the first time I saw Leia Organa!

Pour être honnête, je m’en fiche si le personnage principal est un garçon, une fille ou un Ewok – bon ok, je vais peut-être avoir naturellement plus d’affection envers un Ewok… Mais ça s’arrête là ! Tant que le personnage est profond, intéressant et bien joué, je vais l’aimer de tout mon petit cœur de geek. Et le triste fait est qu’avec Jyn, ça ne le fait pas DU TOUT. Elle parle à peine, pour moi elle n’a pas assez de férocité et tout simplement, il n’y a pas d’étincelle entre nous. A titre de comparaison, vous auriez dû voir ma tête la première fois que j’ai vu Leia Organa !

I am also sorry to say that choosing Diego Luna for the Rebel Alliance Captain and Intelligence officer just didn’t work for me either. To me, this actor sticks with one of my favorite movies: The Terminal by Steven Spielberg, where he plays Enrique Cruz from the airport’s food service – an insanely cute guy that you just want to hug who’s madly in love with a beautiful co-worker but too shy to act on it. Diego Luna will always be Enrique Cruz in my mind, cute and adorable – not some rebel cold-blooded sniper! Maybe it would ease my conscious if there was some kind of a love story between Cassian Andor and Jyn Erso, who knows… Or now that I think of it, someone like Pedro Pascal – the genius Prince Oberyn Martell in the Game of Thrones, might have convinced me more!

Je suis aussi désolée de dire que le choix de Diego Luna pour l’officier des renseignements de l’Alliance n’a pas fonctionné pour moi non plus. A mes yeux, cet acteur est à jamais lié avec l’un de mes films préférés : Le Terminal de Steven Spielberg, où il incarne Enrique Cruz du service de restauration de l’aéroport – un gars super mignon auquel j’ai envie de faire des câlins, qui est follement amoureux d’une jolie collègue mais il est trop timide pour lui parler. Dans ma tête Diego Luna sera toujours Enrique Cruz : mignon et adorable, pas une espèce de sniper rebelle au sang froid ! Cela aurait peut-être apaisé ma conscience s’il y avait une sorte d’histoire d’amour entre Cassian Andor et Jyn Erso, qui sait… Ou maintenant que j’y pense, quelqu’un comme Pedro Pascal – le génial Prince Oberyn Martell dans le Trône de Fer, aurait pu me convaincre davantage !

The only character I was really fond of is Chirrut Îmwe, the blind warrior believing in the Force. He’s powerful, sassy, and very well portrayed by Donnie Yen. To me he also represents the only glimpse of the Force aside from the great Darth Vader in Rogue One; without seeing him swoosh a light saber, I had the impression that the midichlorians were strong with this one!

Le seul personnage qui m’a réellement séduite est Chirrut Îmwe, le guerrier aveugle adepte de la Force. Il est puissant, effronté, et très bien interprété par Donnie Yen. Il représente également pour moi la seule lueur de la Force à part le grand Darth Vader dans Rogue One ; sans que je le voie faire ziouummm avec un sabre laser, j’avais l’impression que les midichloriens étaient puissants avec celui-là !

Moreover, another thing that surprised me in a sad way is the omnipresence of the Human race. I mean sure, we are used to having mainly human heroes in Star Wars, but the aliens are what we’re generally looking forward to seeing as well! Aside from the screeching lakaru Bistan and the splendid Admiral Raddus (Admiral Ackbar must be proud, and I definitely know that my dear friend Marcus will love him unconditionally) there was not enough alien vibe in Rogue One, at least to my taste.

De plus, une autre chose qui m’a déçue était l’omniprésence de la race humaine. Je veux dire d’accord, nous sommes habitués à avoir des héros humains pour la plupart dans Star Wars, mais en général nous avons toujours aussi pas mal d’aliens ! A part Bistan – le lakaru poussant des cris de malade et le splendide Amiral Raddus (dont Amiral Ackbar doit être fier, et dont mon cher ami Marcus est sans doute tombé éperdument amoureux), à mes yeux il n’y a pas eu assez de vibe alien dans Rogue One.

Which leads me to another point, more general this time: the Star Wars magic. What is THE thing you think about when a Star Wars movie is involved…?

Ce qui me ramène vers un autre point, plus général cette fois-ci : la magie Star Wars. Quelle est LA chose indispensable quand on évoque un film Star Wars…?

The opening, of course. « A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away… » TATATAAAA!!!! And there goes the legendary scrolled introduction with its music that makes your heart rate double in a few seconds from excitement. It’s Star Wars, and it’s happening. So imagine our disappointment right from the beginning of Rogue One when we were ready to blast off and actually sing (not sure it’s the best word for it though) the opening theme and learn something about what we were about to witness. Nothing. From that moment I knew the magic will not be the same in this movie.

L’opening, bien évidemment. « Il y a longtemps, dans une galaxie lointaine, très lointaine… » TATATAAAA!!!! S’ensuit la légendaire intro avec le texte défilant et la musique qui double mon rythme cardiaque tellement c’est excitant. C’est du Star Wars, et ça y va. Imaginez donc notre déception dès le tout début de Rogue One où nous étions prêts à décoller et carrément chanter (quoique ce n’est peut-être pas le meilleur mot) le thème d’ouverture et d’apprendre quelque chose sur le contexte de ce que nous allions voir. Rien. A partir de cet instant je savais que la magie n’allait pas être la même dans ce film.

By the way, Player 2 and I call it the baboon song; the word in French is « babouin », and if you listen really carefully, the classic Star Wars opening theme goes something like this:

The second thing that makes the Star Wars magic happen for me is the music. No matter which episode, it always makes me jump into hyperspace and appreciate the galactic adventures even more. I can’t really explain it, but I thought the music in Rogue One was different from the other movies of the saga. You think that you hear some familiar tunes, but then they get twisted in an unrecognizable manner. Of course it is normal to have nuances and a different approach for a spin-off, and it is also possible that I am getting too old in my head for appreciating new things when it comes to my beloved fandom. But I cannot help feeling a bit off because of it.

Le deuxième élément qui fait que la magie Star Wars fait son effet sur moi est la musique. Dans chaque épisode, c’est ce qui me fait sauter dans l’hyperespace et apprécier encore plus les aventures galactiques. Je ne sais pas vraiment l’expliquer, mais j’ai eu l’impression que la musique dans Rogue One est différente de tous les autres films de la saga. Tu crois entendre des notes familières, mais elles finissent tordues jusqu’à devenir méconnaissables. Je crois que c’est tout à fait normal d’avoir des nuances et une autre approche pour un spin-off, il est également possible que je deviens trop vieille dans ma tête pour apprécier de nouvelles variations concernant mon fandom adoré. Mais je ne peux m’empêcher de me sentir un peu refroidie à cause de ça.

If you managed to read through my ramblings down to this point, you must think that I hated Rogue One. While « hate » might be too strong a word (but a perfect one for a Sith apprentice I aspire to become one day), I am surely not that crazy about it and will not be watching it religiously hundreds of times like I do with the classic six episodes. However, I do have to admit that a few aspects blew my mind.

Si vous avez réussi à lire mes divagations jusqu’ici, vous devez penser que j’ai absolument détesté Rogue One. Tandis que le concept de la haine est peut-être un peu fort (mais parfait pour une apprentie Sith que j’espère devenir un jour), je ne suis sans doute pas si admirative et je ne vais pas le regarder religieusement d’innombrables fois, comme c’est le cas avec les six épisodes classiques. Je dois tout de même reconnaître que certains aspects de ce film sont époustouflants.

Visually, the movie is breathtaking. I instantly fell in love with the new locations, especially Scarif which I found very beautiful. The final battle is also amazing, as well as the featured spaceships and gear. And the CGI, oh boy! For a moment I thought it was really Grand Moff Tarkin I was watching on the screen, and seeing my favorite princess Leia just made my day. I admire the hard work the staff put into bringing these two characters back into Rogue One exactly as they were in A New Hope; it was very well done and the famous Star Wars magic I was so eager to find was present thanks to them.

Visuellement, le film est à couper le souffle. Je suis de suite tombée amoureuse de nouvelles localisations, de Scarif en particulier que j’ai trouvé sublime. La bataille finale est très impressionnante, tout comme les vaisseaux et l’équipement montré. Et la CGI, ça alors ! J’ai cru pendant un moment que c’était vraiment le Grand Moff Tarkin à l’écran, et voir ma princesse préférée m’a comblé de bonheur. J’admire le travail fourni par l’équipe technique pour ramener ces deux personnages dans Rogue One exactement comme ils étaient dans Un Nouvel Espoir ; un bel exploit grâce auquel la magie Star Wars que je cherchais avec tant de zèle était bien présente.

There were precisely four moments in Rogue One when I felt I was watching a Star Wars tale that I loved. They were all concentrated in the last 15 or 20 minutes of the movie, but they surely did the (don’t say Jedi mind, just don’t…) trick:

Il y avait précisément quatre moments dans Rogue One où je sentais que je regardais un conte Star Wars que j’adore. Ils étaient tous concentrés dans les dernières 15 ou 20 minutes du film, mais ils ont bien fait l’affaire :

• The importance of hope: the Rebellion has been built on hope, just as much as Obi Wan is Leia’s only hope to get the plan going. The circle is being made and the concept of Hope is very strong.
• The last scene of Chirrut Îmwe: because he is the Force and the Force is with him.
• The Darth Vader slaughter scene: hearing that lightsaber swooshed always does it for me!
• The « we die together with this planet » scene: it’s not that I don’t like Jyn and Cassian, but their last scene together is beautiful and I finally got to feel their ultimate sacrifice. They did it together, and they are taken away with this planet – it would have been too much to save them miraculously, so I am glad that the « happy ever after » card hasn’t been played in this scene.

• L’importance de l’espoir : la Rébellion a été bâtie dessus, tout comme Obi Wan était le dernier espoir de Leia pour faire marcher la stratégie. La boucle est bouclée et le concept de l’Espoir y est très fort.
• La dernière scène de Chirrut Îmwe : parce qu’il est la Force et la Force est avec lui.
• La scène du massacre de Darth Vader : entendre le vrombissement de ce sabre laser fait toujours son effet !
• La scène « nous mourons ensemble avec cette planète » : ce n’est pas que je n’aime pas Jyn et Cassian, mais leur dernière scène est belle et j’ai ressenti leur ultime sacrifice. Ils l’ont fait ensemble, et ils sont emportés avec cette planète – cela aurait été trop de les sauver miraculeusement, je suis donc contente que la carte « ils vécurent heureux » n’a pas été utilisé dans cette scène.

That’s about it, as far as my first impression goes! I would love to hear your point of view, and don’t be shy if there’s something you don’t agree with – arguing about Star Wars is one of my favorite hobbies 😀
